Database Management

This section discusses how to create and manage PowerSong databases, but it does not discuss how to manage songs in the database. Please refer to Section 7 (Song Management) for full information about how to add, remove, edit and categorise songs in PowerSong databases.

Creating Databases

PowerSong databases can be created either when launching the software, or at any time when an existing database is already open.

If you are attempting to create a database immediately after launching the software, then click on the appropriate button to create a new database. If you are attempting to create a database when one is already open, then click on the “Create Database” menu item, which resides on the Database menu. In this case, the currently open database will be closed and the newly created database will be opened.

In either case you are prompted for details about the new database. Please specify a folder where the new database will be created. You can use the ellipses (…) button to pop up a dialog box which may make this process easier. Then, enter a name for the database. The software will create a folder on the hard disk with that name at the previously specified location.

PowerSong databases are essentially folders contained on the hard disk, which contain several files that represent such things as songs, styles, pluging…etc. The name of the database is combined with its specified location to form its actual location. Since PowerSong can only create databases that don’t already exist, please make sure that you specify a unique name for the database.

Loading Databases

PowerSong databases can be loaded either when launching the software, or at any time when an existing database is already open.

If you are attempting to load a database immediately after launching the software, then click on the appropriate button to load a database. If you are attempting to load a database when one is already open, then click on the “Load Database” menu item, which resides on the Database menu. In this case, the currently open database will be closed and the specified database will be opened.

In either case you are prompted for a folder containing an existing PowerSong database. Please select one and click on the OK button to load the database. If the selected location does not contain a valid PowerSong database then you will be told this and asked to specify a different location.
Note: If you create a database using PowerSong and then use a later version of PowerSong to open it, it is possible and likely that PowerSong will automatically and invisibly “upgrade” the database to use new features contained in the newer version. It is then quite likely that it will no longer be possible to open the database in the old version of PowerSong.

Saving Changes to the Database

PowerSong automatically saves changes to the database whenever necessary, therefore there are no “Save” icons available in the interface. From an early stage it was thought that PowerSong would be more “user friendly” if its operation were simplified this way.

Configuration Options

PowerSong can be configured in various ways via its configuration dialog box. Most of the available options are tied to the specific database that is currently open, but some relate to the PowerSong software itself. Settings relating to the PowerSong software rather than a specific database are clearly identified whenever appropriate. The following sub sections describe the configuration options in detail.

General Options

The first page on the options form contains general configuration options that apply to the currently active database.

To change how PowerSong works in various ways for the currently open database, alter the value of the settings here. The settings should be self explanatory. If they are not, please contact us and we will document them further.

Scrolling Notices

The scrolling notices page on the options form contains options relating to the scrolling notice configuration options that apply to the currently active database.

To change how PowerSong handles scrolling notices for the currently open database, alter the value of the settings here. The settings should be self explanatory. If they are not, please contact us and we will document them further.

Installed Bible Translations

The bible translation management page on the options form contains bible translation configuration options that apply to the PowerSong software itself, and are therefore database-agnostic and apply to all databases.

Please see Section 8.2 (Configuring Bible Translations) to find out how to configure bible translations.

Importing and Exporting Data

It is possible to import and export data between PowerSong databases. The following sub sections describe the import / export functionality available in PowerSong.

Exporting Data to PowerSong Archives

Importing Data from PowerSong Archives

Importing Data from Other Software

It is possible to import songs from other software. To do this, click on the relevant import option from the Database menu of the main user interface. You will then be prompted for further information, after which the songs contained in the other software will be copied into the currently open PowerSong database.
Currently, it is only possible to import data from Presenter, and even this functionality has not yet been tested (we don’t have access to a copy of Presenter!). This is an area of PowerSong that could do with some improvement, so if you would like to import your favourite songs from a different software package, please contact us.

Backup and Restore

PowerSong databases can be exported and imported for backup and restore purposes. The act of exporting a database causes all of the items in that database to be inserted into a single file. That file can then be imported again, for example on a different machine. Using this facility, it is also possible to merge two databases together by exporting one database into a file and importing that file in the other database.

Downloading Additional Content

PowerSong contains a portal that allows you to download additional content seamlessly from the PowerSong website. To do this, load a database and then click on the “Download Additional Content” menu item contained in the Database menu of the main user interface. You will then be presented with a dialog box with several options for downloading additional content.

At the time of writing, the following types of additional content are available:

• The latest collection of nice-looking predefined styles that can be applied to songs in the play list.
• The latest collection of songs that other users of the software have previously submitted and made available.
• Alternative bible translations that can be installed into PowerSong itself, such as the Bible in Basic English.

Click on any of the options to download the content into the currently loaded database. Note that when you download a bible translation, it is installed into PowerSong itself and is therefore database-agnostic. In other words, all databases will be able to use the newly installed bible translation.
